Educational Websites

On the scholastic website there is a homework hub
that I like. It has tools to help students do well in school. There is a place they can go to help them with
math facts,
vocabulary words
spelling words
book reports
studying for tests
and many more helpful links. There is also a link to make flash cards to help students study for either math, spelling or vocabulary words. Students can just put in the words or numbers they want to study and the site helps them to make the flash cards.

I would use this site to help students improve their study skills. The math games are fun and kids could really improve their skills. The spelling word site also has activities such as word scramble and word search to make their studying more interesting and fun. I would feel good about letting students work on this site, it seems to be kid-friendly and easy to navigate. It also has information and helps for parents and teachers. I really like this site.

Intro to the Internet

# What does WWW stand for in a web address? World Wide Web. What is the WWW? It is a collection of electronic documents (information) that is linked together electronically, like a big web. The documents are stored on computers around the world. The World Wide Web has become not only a source of vast information, but also buying and selling of electronic information as well as books and other tangible items. Bank transactions are also conducted online.
# Think about the age range of your students. How would you explain/define the Internet to them? This definition is geared towards 9-11 year olds: The internet is a connection that is world wide. It is like a big spider web, that's why we use the letters WWW in front of web addresses; it stands for the World Wide Web. The internet is used to communicate with other people by writing emails or instant messaging friends. It is also used to find information about almost anything. The internet is used to buy and sell information, or most anything. The information that is sent over the internet is stored on electronic documents and is sent from one computer to another throughout the world. (Write the definition you would give them, 4 – 6 sentences max., in student friendly terms.)

1. Would you use any graphical representations to help with your explanation? Yes. If so, what? I would use a map with strings and tacks to help them get a visual of a world wide web.
2. A demonstration? Yes. If so, what? I would like to use the internet to demonstrate email, search engines and also maybe show them some educational sites that might interest them.

# What does URL stand for? Uniform Resource Locator .What is it? It is the unique address for a given page on the server. You type in the URL to go to a specific page. Some websites will have multiple URLs that access the same site.
# What are some common error messages you can receive when using the Internet? (List at least 3 and their meanings) 400- bad request- something is wrong with the address you typed in, it either no longer exists, or it was typed in wrong. 404- Not found- the website either no longer exists on the server, or it is nowhere to be found. 503- service unavailable- internet connection may be down or there is a problem with the Internet Service Provider (ISP).
# What do the letters HTML stand for? Hypertext Markup Language Explain. HTML is a set of special tags or codes that instruct a web browser how to display a Hypertext document.
# What do the letters http stand for? Hypertext Transfer Protocol Explain. Http is the method that is used to transfer hypertext files across the internet.
# What function do you see the Internet playing in your classroom? I would like to use it often, however it will depend on what technology is available in my classroom and school. I would like to use it for information gathering for reports, for daily weather, local, national and international headlines and for cool educational sites just to name a few. What do you see as the benefits? It will help engage students who are digital immigrants; it will also bring new and interesting information into the classroom. The internet can also help make learning more fun because of so many fun websites, educational clips and games. The drawbacks? Security issues, inappropriate material, and students spending too much time on the technology and not enough on the content.

iMovie assignment

This assignment was fun , but very frustrating at times. Technology is such a great asset, but it can be very frustrating when it doesn't work like it is suppose to. Technology always seems to have its frustrations and maybe it is just because I am still learning so much. I did like the creativity of making a movie and using technology to edit it and make it look even better. However, having fourth or even fifth graders make their own movie seems way above their level of patience and abilities. I could be wrong about that, there probably are kids that age who could do it, but the learning curve and frustrations would probably outweigh the concepts they learned. Having said all of that, I do think that it might be a good idea to work as a class to make a movie. First I would have the students help me come up with ideas that went along with the subject. Then I would place them in groups and give each group an assignment. After they were done with their assignments, I would let them help with the filming. Then I would do the editing it myself (I hope I could do it). Seriously, I think it could be a fun project that would help the students to work together in creating something they could all be proud of.
